Glimmerglass, the leading provider of Intelligent Optical Switches, is committed to releasing environmentally friendly products as part of the Glimmerglass Hazardous Substance Reduction initiative. Glimmerglass recognizes that eliminating certain hazardous substances from our products is beneficial not only to the environment but also to our customers and employees.
This Glimmerglass initiative is a voluntary program modeled after the European Union Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive, which restricts the use of harmful substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium in new equipment. This initiative includes an exemption for the use of lead in solder to allow leaded solders for professional, high reliability applications where efficient lead-free substitutes have not been identified. This category of compliance is informally referred as RoHS-5 by the telecommunication industry and same component manufacturers.
Glimmerglass manufacturing and engineering teams are working to adapt our products to use RoHS-5 compliant components and manufacturing processes. The transition to RoHS-compliant products will be done over a progressive timeline as some existing products are transitioned and new products are released with hazardous substance-free components. In 2007, Glimmerglass plans to have a substantial number of core components transitioned to RoHS-5 compliance with the completion of the transition by 2010. By investing in RoHS-5 compliance, Glimmerglass demonstrates a commitment to the environment and our customers by helping engineers design and develop environmentally friendly solutions using Glimmerglass products.
