Sales Engineer (SF Bay Area/Hayward, CA)

The Sales Engineer will support Sales Directors for pre-sale activities and sales related account management for existing customers.  Pre-sales activities may include completing RFP responses, evaluating customer needs (program and technical), performing the primary role of planning product demonstrations and evaluations (customers or trade shows). Post-sales engagement activities include account based product management to ensure that products are considered for purchase against competitive offers as well as for new applications. 

The Sales Engineer will work in a close knit team together with Customer Support, Product Management and Business Development to successfully sell and deploy products.  The role will include providing feedback and direction to Product Management for the evolution of the product based on customer input.

Additionally the following responsibility areas are expected as part the Sales Engineer role:

Customer Facing Responsibilities:
Sales point of contact for all technical (meaning system capabilities & configurations) discussions and questions including:

  • Customer oriented architecture and design meetings involving the products
  • Technical and sales phone calls with customer
  • Technical and sales e-mails from customer
  • Customer feature enhancement requests (liaison between product management and customer product and network development teams) including:
    • Creation of Marketing Requirements documenting customer feature requests
    • Review of Marketing Requirements with customer to ensure requirements reflect desire of marketing and product teams
    • Review of prioritization with customer
    • Technical point of contact for any assigned Customer RFx responses

Company Facing Responsibilities:

  • Work along-side Sales Director ensuring account strategy is consistent between business and technical needs.
  • Support Sales Director during customer meetings where technical discussions are expected.
  • Participate in contract negotiation activities to ensure the company is appropriately represented on technical aspects including review of all contractually binding documents for technical accuracy.
  • Single point of contact for all technical discussions and questions towards customer / account
  • Explaining customer architecture and design discussions with product management and engineering
  • Technical e-mail interaction with product management and engineering associated with account
  • Customer feature enhancement requests (liaison between our product management and customer product and network development teams) including:
    • Creation of  MRD documenting customer feature requests
    • Prioritization of customer feature requests with product management for next software release
    • Coordinate internal teams to understand customer needs and complete Customer RFx responses
    • Create any necessary customer / account specific documentation required in order to meet all external customer documentation requirements.

Required Qualifications

The qualified candidate should have a minimum of a bachelor's degree
preferably in engineering or computer science or equivalent.   Direct and
fluent experience in two of the four below areas required with all four being ideal:

  • Aggressive "can-do" attitude
  • Previous sales engineering or support experience with optical networking equipment
  • Knowledge of GMPLS/Control Plane protocols
  • Entrepreneurial skills

Experience/Educational Requirements:

Five to ten years experience working as an equipment vendor interacting with customers in Business Development, Sales Engineering and/or pre-sales technical account management roles for lab trial and commercial deployment of network equipment. 

Experience working for small / privately held companies is a plus.
